William Morton produces P.R. images of rap artist Granzlam Almighty.
William Morton completed a P.R. shoot of rap artist Granzlam Almighty today at Studio J. William was challenged with capturing both Granzlam’s happy-go-lucky, laid back personality as well as his serious artist’s side. Both high-key and dramatic lighting were used to contrast the rapper. Home Bass will be promoting Granzlam Almighty soon, so stay tuned for details on where you can see (and hear) Granzlam!

William Morton shoots model April for the fashion styling class at Mesa College.
Photographer William Morton helped three students from a Mesa College fashion styling class complete their class project yesterday. The students were tasked with presenting images of a rock star, so William donated the studio time and a 4-hour shoot to capture the different looks created by the team. Renee Candler and her classmates did a great job with model April, as did makeup artist CeCe. See a few examples below.

Fashion Model Parties are the ultimate party for teen girls- a professional makeover for all and a supermodel experience on set with a professional photographer.
Studio J hosted its first Fashion Model Party yesterday. Enthusiastically proclaimed a success by all involved, the studio opened its doors to a 14-year old birthday girl and eight of her closest friends. The girls all received makeup from the nationally known Mary Erickson and hair styles from Mary’s assistant Jenn. The girls enjoyed (non-alcoholic) “Champagne” while they waited their turn in the makeup chairs or on set. Photographer William Morton of San Diego Model Portfolios worked with the girls on set, capturing both glamorous and fun images of each girl. Courtesy of the birthday girl, the girls were treated to CDs of their images along with a music video of their day’s fun. This party is just too good to pass up! See a few sample images below.
Referred by a fellow Professional Photographers of America (PPA) member John Grow of Sideline Productions, photographer William Morton spent most of the day today photographing a variety of sports memorabilia for Game Used Universe, an online auction website. Almost all of the items were autographed and/or used by a major league player in a game, so the day became a bit of a history lesson as well as a “Who’s who” in sports. The evolution served as a great test for the workflow process of volume product photography, allowing William to use the Nikon D3 tethered but also test the Live View capability of Nikon Capture Control Pro 2 software. This was very effective for positioning the camera overhead on a boom and being able to focus and shoot down on a jersey without being able to look through the camera. Overall the day was a great success, with multiple views of almost 100 items all captured and archived to DVD in a single day.

We had a fun shoot in the studio today! My friend Mike (aka “Gunny”) brought his Night Rod downtown and we lit it up. Lighting a black bike with lots of reflective metal and chrome proved to be quite a challenge, especially on a dark background! Below is a sample of what we came up with at the end of the day.
ASMP San Diego presented a Pro Workshop Series on Saturday August 22. The workshop consisted of three 2-hour segments concentrating on product photography, fashion lighting, and sports/action photography. Lon Atkinson hosted the event and demonstrated how he builds the lighting for a western gun and holster and then fine-tunes the image captured on the medium-format Sinar camera. Studio J owner William Morton demonstrated fashion lighting for different types of fabrics and wardrobe. William provided an exemplary demonstration of Murphy’s Laws in all their glory, as first one lighting power pack smoked and then a backup pack failed halfway through the segment. Added on top of two models canceling the day prior, two laptops not talking to either the projectors or the camera, and software failing to initialize, William certainly had his hands full as he worked around the multitude of problems to get working solutions. Fortunately photo assistant Jesse Dhein helped tremendously. Eventually last-minute-volunteer models Heidi Lee and Stephanie June posed while William illustrated the key features of the dresses provided by stylist Susan Linnet Cox, who also demonstrated how she makes the wardrobe “fit” the model. Makeup Artist Mary Erickson transformed the models’ to make them “camera ready.” The attendees commented that they appreciated seeing a shoot that didn’t go flawlessly, as the real-world scenario illustrated the importance of not only having a Plan B, but a Plan C, Plan D, and Plan E as a minimum. Perseverance pays off! Sports photographer Stan Liu finished off the workshop with a frank discussion of the sports photography industry, his stellar imagery, and a demonstration outside with a well-armed high-jumping model. All-in-all, it was an info-packed day for the attendees. A few candid images from William’s segment are included below, compliments of Wayne Richard, as well as a couple of William’s shots.
